Egypt's Ministry of Transport has signed an $800mn deal with a Chinese company to co-operate on a new $800mn rail project in the Greater Cairo area.

The project involves construction of an 80km, two-way railway that will be powered by Electric Traction. It will link El-Salam City with Bilbeis City and Sharqeya, according to Egypt's Daily News.

Aviation Industry of China has designed the project, which will connect with the third line of Cairo's Metro at the Salam station.

The minister also said the project would help to cut traffic congestion and pollution.
