Qatar reduces number of World Cup stadiums

Reports state stadium number has fallen from 12 to nine

NEWS, Business, Stadium, World cup

Qatar has reduced the number of stadiums planned for the FIFA 2022 World Cup by a third due to rising costs and continuous project delays, according to a report by Bloomberg.

The Gulf state was scheduled to build 12 stadiums for the showpiece tournament, including nine new playing fields and three refurbishments.

However, Ghanim Al Kuwari, the organising committee’s senior manager for projects has since said Qatar will build around eight stadiums.

“Their decision was motivated by cost-cutting following an assessment of the real needs on the ground,” John Sfakianakis, chief investment strategist at investment company MASIC in Riyadh, said in an email to Bloomberg.

“It does always make good sense to do necessary cost-cutting and reviews of capex for such huge projects that are front loaded.”

Construction work will start on five stadia for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar this year, according to Yasser al-Mulla, project manager at Al-Rayyan Precinct for the country's Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy.

Addressing an international audience gathered at the MEED Qatar Projects Conference 2014 last month, he said Qatar will issue 10 tenders this year for project managers and design consultants on the stadiums being built for the tournament.
