Spain's Acciona Producciones y Diseño has been selected by the Omani government to design the National Museum of Oman.

The company said it will be the first museum in the Middle East that will be able to serve the blind, adding that the contract was worth nearly $25mn.

The National Museum of Oman, which is expected to open in the fourth quarter of this year, will have 4,000m2 of space and display its permanent collection in 12 halls.

The museum will exhibit about 7,000 pieces that tell Oman's history, as well as offering visitors interactive and audiovisual displays.

In addition, the museum will have a gallery for temporary exhibitions, a visitable warehouse, a storage room and a classroom for teaching children.

"As with all of Acciona Producciones y Diseño's projects, the Company's commitment to "social innovation" means that the National Museum of Oman will be adapted for people with special needs. As a result, the National Museum of Oman will be the first in the Middle East adapted to blind people, and the first in Oman accessible for disabled people," the company said in a statement.

In recent years, Acciona Producciones y Diseño has increased its activity in the Middle East with projects in Qatar, Kuwait and Oman, where it has opened a subsidiary.

These projects include work for the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha and the Qatar Orientalist Museum.
