Ground broken at University of Dubai project
New institution to be completed in Q3 2015
A groundbreaking ceremony has taken place at the University of Dubai project in Academic City.
The event on Monday was attended by dignitaries from the developer Dubai Chamber of Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the university, and the project team.
The university is situated on a site of 273,387m² and phase one comprises three buildings: a four-storey university centre, three-storey college of business and a three-storey college of information technology building in addition to the external works.
The aim is for the institution, which has a built-up area of around 23,000m², to achieve a US Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED Gold certification.
Phase one construction is being carried out by main contractor Kier Dubai within a 16 month period.
Senior project manager Stefan Rehli told CW that about 150 workers were currently on site but this would ramp up to a peak of between 700-800 in the next four months. And in the next two months he expects the slab-on-grade work to start on all three buildings.
“The challenge is the sheer volume of excavation we have got to start with and the timeframe of the project, but having said that we are in an area where we have a lot of space so logistical issues kind of take care of themselves plus we are in a position to meet all of those challenges,” he said.
By the end of the year the structure for all three buildings is likely to be completed and some facade and internal work started.
The concept design of the university comprises of the counter-clockwise spiralling shell shape with the relevant structures on the outside of the spiralling circle. There will be solar shade panels on each structure with a central oasis courtyard in the middle.
Phase two, which is still be be awarded, will include six more buildings which are the college of law, school of management, school of general education, health and fitness building, community zone and shared resources zone.
Building Information Modelling (BIM) has been adopted since the concept design stage and will be used during the construction and operation of the building.
The project is targeting around 81 LEED points through the sustainable site, water and energy efficiency, sustainable materials and resources and indoor air quality. One of the credits for example will be achieved through diverting 75% of the construction waste from landfills and other credits will be achieved through 28% of improvement in the project energy performance.
The lead consultant is DAR Al Handasah Shair and Partners and the project management consultant is Faithful+Gould.
