Speirs and Major Associates have won two awards at the Middle East Lighting Design Awards (MELDA).

At a ceremony held at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Dubai, Jonathan Speirs' work on the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi won Best Public Building Lighting Project and Project of the Year.

Speaking on behalf of the jury, George Katodrytis of the American University of Sharjah said the project took lighting design to "a higher level". He said: "It creates a unique atmosphere of mystery and calmness. It's a flawless masterpiece of lighting design."

Other winners included Barry Hannaford and Katayoon Heidari of DPA in the restaurants and bars category for Junsui at the Burj Al Arab and Mattheiu Larivee of Lux Lighting Design for his temporary installation at Chantel Live at the Pyramids.

Sustainability featured highly on the agenda this year, with Kevan Shaw of Kevan Shaw Lighting Design winning the exterior project award for Qatar's Aspire Tower and its use of intelligently controlled LEDs.

Keynote speaker Ravi Koul said that it was the responsibility of lighting designers to specify more sustainable lighting designs and to lead the way in decreasing energy usage. He also noted that if designers used the currently most energy efficient technologies in all projects, this would result in a global energy saving of 20%.
