Project management firm Hill International has landed a contract from Cairo Airport Company to oversee a $500mn upgrade to the Terminal 2 building at Cairo International Airport.

The work will see the airport's second terminal expanded to double its capacity, making it capable of handling up to 7.5mn passengers a year.

The current terminal will be upgraded and expanded to incorporate new buildings, including a departure hall and an airside pier.

Hill International said the 15-month contract will be worth $1.9mn to its own revenues.

Waleed Abdel Fattah, senior vice-president and North Africa regional manager for Hill's project management group, said: "This project will have a very positive impact on business, tourism and the overall economy.

"We are extremely honoured to have been selected for this important assignment."
