Tenders soon for Bahrain logistics zone

Tenders for the main construction package for Bahrain's US $280 million (BHD105.5 million) logistics zone are expected to go out in June.

Tenders for the main construction package for Bahrain's US $280 million (BHD105.5 million) logistics zone are expected to go out in June.

AT Kearney, which is the management consultant for the project, is looking to award the contract by August at the latest.

The customs-free logistics park has over 475,000m² of leasable space and is designed for capacity expansion demands and to provide simplified, streamlined and efficient multimodal transfer of cargo.

It is located in the Khalifa Bin Salman Port and is regulated by Bahrain General Organisation of Seaports (GOP). Facilities at the park will include a sea port with a capacity of 2.5 million TEUs.

The move forms part of Bahrain's vision to becoming an alternative logistics hub in the Gulf, serving markets such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kuwait, Qatar and, in the future, Iraq.

Infrastructure work on the project is already underway and is expected to be completed in September this year.

"That's when construction of the superstructures in the zone are expected to begin," said Robert Ziegler, vice president, AT Kearney.

"The tender process for the master plan for the superstructures is currently ongoing and we are looking to make an award for that sometime next month. We will build about 30% of the superstructures and that should be done by mid 2009.

AT Kearney is a strategic management consulting firm focused on providing advice to C-level management.
