In the designers corner seminar held at Domotex Middle East on Sunday, Hans Bruinsma; a Dubai-based design consultant from Caspaiou provided a critique of interior design in the Gulf region.

Highlighting the fact that most of the design projects in the Middle East focus predominantly on the exterior design to lure potential investors, according to Bruinsma interiors are left with little, to no creativity.

"You look at the outside of a building, and its stunning for people that want to live in it, work in it, buy it and re-sell it. However, in my opinion these are designed to lure people in, and then that's it," said Bruinsma.

"Money has been spent on the outside of these buildings, whether it be commercial, residential or apartments - and no-one thinks about the inside, the architect has only two choices, and that is to play the game or leave."

As Bruinsma suggests, rethinking the situation and starting to put in efforts for the creative interior design of commercial projects is crucial to Dubai's burgeoning construction sector.

"Filling public places with art, planning our buildings while getting the architects and interior designers to work together. We should be encouraging people who want to live in Dubai - not to make a quick buck - but to enjoy the beautiful designs of where they're living," he said.

"To get the attention of our markets and the willingness to invest in interiors, not just chairs, colours and shapes that match -is becoming more and more difficult. There are sufficient people that want to invest and they need to be helped, and shown how to make an apartment, office, commercial environment a nice place to be in," Bruinsma concluded.
