Jumeirah Zabeel Saray is now Green Globe certified
The luxury resort scored an impressive 90% to win the certification
Jumeirah Zabeel Saray has been awarded the Green Globe certification in recognition of its sustainability management strategies.
The luxury resort, located on the western wing of Palm Jumeirah in Dubai, got the prestigious certification after Farnek, Green Globe’s preferred partner in the region, verified the sustainability achievements of the establishment. Green Globe is the worldwide sustainability system based on internationally accepted criteria for sustainable operation and management of travel and tourism businesses

Jumeirah Zabeel Saray has made use of many water and electricity saving measures at its premises. These include a solar water heater at the Plaj Restaurant to provide hot water in a cost-effective manner, a sewage treatment plant to treat effluent and recycle it for irrigation in the resort grounds and gardens, and an organic chef’s garden, where herbs, fruits and vegetables are grown.
Responsible environmental planning is further displayed with the utilization of composite decking. Instead of using traditional wood, Eco-Wood has been purchased for the construction of decking for all external areas of the resort around the pool bridge, villa terraces, the swimming pool and the Plaj Restaurant.
“We have opted to use Eco–Wood for the resort decking as we strongly encourage preservation and maintenance of ecology and natural resources towards achieving a greener earth,” Fares said. “Eco–Wood is environmentally friendly as it is a feasible and practical timber free alternative solution to usual decking. In addition, Eco-wood does not require the use of hazardous and flammable compounds.”
Guests and visitors at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray are also informed about water and electricity conservation and appropriate energy and waste saving initiatives. The hotel’s policy on paper reduction starts with a paperless check-in and promotional materials in rooms are strictly limited.
Concierge staff use iPads to assist guests with enquiries and a paperless check-out is also offered rather than printing tax invoices or, if needed, guests can receive bills directly via email. The use of paper has also been reduced in back-of-house operations and the resort encourages all staff to reuse or recycle paper.
“It is also commendable that the resort can count 37 UAE nationals as colleagues and has set a target of always retaining a minimum of 32 UAE nationals every month,” Le Biavant said. “Furthermore, to encourage the continuance of Emirati traditions, the executive oriental chef, Musabbeh Al Kaabi promotes local produce and Emirati cuisine to guests.”
As part of Jumeirah Zabeel Saray’s corporate social responsibility, the resort helps children in Nepal by selling candles to guests, with funds from the sales donated to a non-profit organization that supports the poorest children in rural Nepal by providing them with opportunities through educational and personal development.
