The first annual Middle East Architect awards ceremony is happening on the evening of October 8, 2008 and the buzz is being felt around the industry.

Engineering giant ARUP is the gold sponsor of the event and six jurors have confirmed their places on the panel that will ultimately determine what constitutes 'good' architecture in the Middle East.

With this particular awards ceremony, the panel is looking to highlight the region's best-not necessarily biggest, shiniest or most 'iconic'-architecture and create the region's pre-eminent architectural award.

To that end, Middle East Architect sought collaboration with some of the industries most respected, and objective, architectural minds. The jury panel brings together individuals from every corner of the industry and more than a hundred years of skills and experience.

The list of confirmed jurors for the Middle East Architect awards is as follows:

Chair: Dr. Samia Rab (Chair of the Department of Architecture & associate professor of Architecture & Heritage Management, American University of Sharjah)

Member: Hisham Youssef (Co-founder & president, Architectural Association of the UAE; Manager of International Projects, Gensler)

Member: Dr. Sadek Owainati (Co-founder & chairman of the Emirates Green Building Council)

Member: Ibrahim Jaidah (Former head of the Architectural Section for the Qatari Ministry of Municipal Affairs & Agriculture and managing director of Doha's Arab Engineering Bureau)

Member: Dr. M Alaa Madour (Associate professor of architecture for Helwan University (Egypt) & Sultan Qaboos University (Oman))

Member: Dr. Gisela Loehlein (Environmentally-friendly architecture and urban planning consultant to the Director General, Directorate of Public Works, Sharjah, UAE)
