US-based technology firm Johnson Controls has won an order to supply high-efficiency York centrifugal chillers to the Mall of Egypt project in Cairo, the company has announced.

The York chiller technology is aimed at helping the 160,000m² mall reduce energy and operational costs and provide a comfortable environment for visitors and tenants when it opens in 2015.

Designed to achieve LEED Gold certification, the two-level facility will feature around 400 retail outlets, an indoor ski and snow park, a 17-screen cinema, a family entertainment centre, and more than 50 food and beverage outlets.

“The Mall of Egypt will set the regional standard for bringing energy efficiency to such a glamorous destination,” said Claude Allain, vice president and general manager, Middle East for Johnson Controls. “We are proud to help the mall reduce its operating costs and carbon footprint for generations to come.”

Mohamed Mekawy, sales manager, Johnson Controls, added: “Sixty-eight percent of a building’s energy consumption typically comes from the heating and cooling systems. The mall’s choice to use York chillers will exceed industry standards for operations, increase system efficiency by 15%, and benefit from environmentally-friendly refrigerant.”

York chillers are manufactured in the US city of San Antonio.
