Developer Gulf Related has held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of work at Al Maryah Central -its 2.3mn ft2 super-regional shopping centre planned for Al Maryah Island in Abu Dhabi.

The firm said that its decision to go ahead with the scheme follows its recent signing of deals with US department stores Macy's and Bloomingdales - both of which will take space at the centre alongside Al Tayer Group, which has pledged to open more than 20 stores that will take up around one-third of the mall's space. An outdoor ampitheatre can also be used for film screenings and events.

The centre has been designed by architectural practice Elkus Manfredi, but is still in the tendering process for a main contractor. An appointment is expected to be made by mid-2015, with a view to the centre opening in March 2018.

The 2.3mn ft2 mall is fully funded and is part of a 3.1mn ft2 scheme containing adjoining luxury residential and hotel towers.

Ken Himmel, co-managing partner at Gulf Related, said: “We are thrilled to commence construction on Al Maryah Central and bring to life a world-class, destination-making offering evolving from the remarkable response by the retail community to The Galleria on Al Maryah Island."

His fellow managing partner, Karim El Solh, added: “When combined with The Galleria on Al Maryah Island both developments will create a 2.9 million square foot waterfront retail shopping destination. This development will reflect the burgeoning vibrancy of Al Maryah Island, complement the lifestyle and culture of Abu Dhabi and secure local, regional and international recognition for the district.”

Gulf Related is a joint venture between Gulf Capital and New York-based developer Related Real Estate. It has already completed The Galleria at Sowwah Square and is developing a 550-unit compound for expatriates living in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Once complete, Al Maryah Central will be connected to 15mn ft2 of adjacent developments including the Rosewood Abu Dhabi and Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi (due for conpletion in 2016), Cleveland Clinic and new headquarters buildings for Al Hilal Bank and National Bank of Abu Dhabi.
