Ras Al Khaimah-owned real estate developer, Rakeen, has launched Dana Island in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK).

Dana Island, which will include several world-class hotels, and commercial and residential complexes, will extend 7km into the sea, and is expected to create an estimated 53km of coastal land in RAK.

The island's design consists of a main stem in three parts and ten leaf-shaped islands.

The project will have two phases: intermediate and final phase, and when complete, Dana Island will have an area of 6.8 million m2 of land. The sand required for the construction will be sourced offshore, while rock materials will come from various quarries in RAK.

Wahid Attalla, board member, Rakeen, confirmed that the island's construction will have minimal environmental impact. He said: "Rakeen has adopted the most sophisticated construction technologies to ensure that the Dana Island project will preserve the marine environment.

Rakeen has appointed international consultant COWI to carry out an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project, while an environmental management and monitoring plan is to be put in place during construction.
