The new Metro Jeddah Company set up to deliver the city's integrated transport network has launched a tender seeking contractors to build the new Obhur Creek Bridge.

In an advertisement placed in this week's print edition of Construction Week, the organisation said it is seeking design-build contractors "with a proven track record in engineering, procurement and construction of iconic suspension and tied arch bridges in a marine environment".

The bridge will be built over Obhur Creek which is 20km north of the city centre and divides the districts of South and North Obhur.

The northern side is home to a number of major, new masterplanned communities being undertaken under the city's own development plan and by private investors.

The crossing will be to the north west of the city's airport and will have eight car lanes (four in each direction), a two-lane route for the city's new rail transit system and sidewalks for foot passengers.

Bids are being invited from both local and international contractors who have at least ten years experience of designing bridges that have a span of at least 200m in width. Pre-qualification documents can be downloaded from ftp://metrojeddah.com.sa and responses must be received by 2pm KSA time on Sunday, 4 January.

Metro Jeddah was set up last year to deliver the new Jeddah Public Transportation Programme that includes both a new metro and light rail system for the city, as well as a corniche tramway, marine ferries and water taxis, park and ride facilities and the new Obhur Creek bridge.

Aecom won a $28mn commission in May to carry out preliminary designs for the Metro and in July French transport giant Systra announced that it had been granted a $73.6mn deal to undertake the preliminary engineering designs.
