CW Awards: ASTAD wins Sustainability Initiative
Smart Solar Grid project described by judges as a 'simple, but effective, initiative'
Qatar Foundation, ASTAD Project Management, claimed the Sustainability Initiative of the Year honour for its Smart Solar Grid project.
On receiving the award, Sheikh Soud Al-Thani, sustainability manager, said: “This award adds to our record because this is not the first time we have won this award from Construction Week. It shows the seriousness of ASTAD in the construction market and how we deliver beyond the regional standards, to international standards and higher."
In deciding on the winners for the Sustainability Initiative of the Year, judges were looking for effective solutions that go further than accreditation or a stamp of approval from a certification programme to provide long-lasting results.
Astad's Smart Solar Grid came in for particular praise from the judges for its great use of renewables in a world-class project. One judge described it as a “simple, but effective, initiative”.
Abdulaziz Al-Mulla, chief commercial officer at ASTAD Project Management, said: “We are delighted to be here today and to win this prize today. This is not something surprising to us because ASTAD has put magnificent and immense efforts and expertise into sustainability. This represents the fruition of the work of our sustainability team."
The highly commended entry in this category went to Sustainable Builders for its Al Barari Project. It was selected by the judges for its “extraordinary foresight and its ability to achieve its project in a desert landscape”.
Other finalists were Gulf Contracting Company, WSP, Khansaheb Civil Engineering and Petroleum Development Oman.
