An Oman Air Airbus A330 landed on the runway at the new airport on Sunday

The first phase of the new Muscat International Airport has received a soft launch.

An Oman Air Airbus A330 landed on the runway at the new airport on Sunday.

Phase One of the project is expected to cost around RO700mn, with the entire airport coming in at an estimated RO1.85bn.

According to a report in Muscat Daily, Dr Zaabi said the new runway will operate on a transitional phase for the first 21 days, which means that it will be open for only five hours, from 1pm to 6pm. Thereafter, it will act as the sole runway with the old one closing for renovation. After one year of work, both runways will be used by the airport.

He said that while the current runway can accommodate a landing every six minutes, the new one can take a landing every two minutes.

The other infrastructure that was inaugurated includes the air traffic control (ATC) tower; the new building for PACA and the road linking Sultan Qaboos Highway and the 18th November Street.
