MEP consultancy Red Engineering has signed a strategic alliance with Australian structural engineering firm BG&E Engineers to offer a full design package for projects in the UAE.

The Dubai-based offices of both firms have undertaken a three-month ratification process of the alliance, which was due to be formally launched at the end of June.

The two firms have worked together on various projects in the UAE over the past five years; the formal alliance is aimed at meeting the changing methods of operation within the construction industry and an increased demand from clients for a single point of contact on projects.

"A lot of clients have a preconceived idea that there are a lot of benefits in having combined M&E and structural engineering services under one roof," explained Red Engineering director Mick Cairns.

"And there are benefits if you do it properly and genuinely put a good M&E team together with a good structural team who understand each other - then you will get a far better product," he stressed.

Design integration will be a major focus for the firms under the alliance, with early involvement in project designs from both sides. BG&E director Peter De Bruin explained: "We have an integrated approach whereby during the design stage we will sort out any problems [in integrating the MEP systems with the structural design] so when it comes to the actual construction we are not faced with wasted time and money redesigning."

"The key [to good design integration] is bringing the issues to the table during the concept stage, truly understanding the space challenges of the building and its functionality; and with regards to the MEP and structural solutions, genuinely working hand in hand with each other," added Cairns.

The firm's have opened offices within the same building in Abu Dhabi, easing their ability to work together in the Emirate. They will bid for future projects within the region independently or in partnership depending on the needs of the projects. The long-term goal is to roll-out the partnership on a global level.
