Fire in Musaffah warehouse in Abu Dhabi kills ten
Police say warehouse in Musaffah Industrial Area was being used illegally as worker accommodation
Ten people died and eight others were injured after a fire broke out in a building in the Mussafah Industrial Area of Abu Dhabi on Friday.
The fire started on the first floor of a two-storey commercial building that houses seven shops and a car repair outlet. However, it then spread to a warehouse on the second floor that was being used illegally as worker accommodation, according to Abu Dhabi Police.
In a statement, the Police said that its operations room received notification of the fire at 03:44AM on Thursday morning in three car repair shops. Firefighting units were dispatched from three depots supported by rapid intervention teams from two other locations.
The fire gutted the whole of the building but the firefighting teams managed to stop it from spreading to neighbouring buildings. The injured were provided with first aid and the bodies of the dead were transferred to a nearby hospital.
The Abu Dhabi Police have said they have launched an investigation into the incident and have arrested the building's owner.
The Abu Dhabi Civil Defense General Directorate has also warned workshop owners and workers of the dangers associated with illegal housing, adding that they would show "zero tolerance" to anyone who disregarded public safety.
