Ground broken for economic zone at Qatar's port

Qatar's economic zones company, Manateq, has broken ground on the new, 33.5km2 economic zone renamed as Um Alhoul Special Economic Zone which will be built next to the country's massive new port - itself renamed Hamad Port.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site of the new zone, which will be home to light manufacturing companies in the building materials, metals, logistics, petrochemicals, food processing and maritime sectors. The project, which will be split into three economic zones, features a dedicated canal linking into the the port for firms in the marine sector.

Manateq will begin allocating land to investors at the site from the third quarter of this year and said that sites for the first development phase will be ready for handover by Q2 2016.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by key dignatories including Qatar's Prime Minister, HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Minister of Economy and Commerce HE Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim Al Thani, and Manateq CEO Fahad Rashid Al-Kaabi.

Minister of Economy Sheikh Ahmed said: “This groundbreaking ceremony of Um Alhoul special economic zone is testament to the firm resolve and unwavering commitment of the State of Qatar towards a strategically and fully diversified economy.

“I look forward to its full completion, the efficient delivery of world-class facilities and services and the successful and thriving operations of home-grown, locally-based businesses within these special economic zones in the future.”
