With numerous residential and commercial projects popping up across the region, the Middle East’s cleaning sector is well-poised for momentous growth.

Coupled with the increased national infrastructure developments of the UAE, Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia, market opportunity, increased responsibilities and expectations are at an all-time high.

According to a report released last year by the Middle East Facilities Management Association (MEFMA), the Middle East’s cleaning and hygiene industry is expected to grow 275% by the year 2020.

During that time, the report also predicts that the market segment’s worth will steadily increase from $21.78bn (AED 80bn) to $81.66bn (AED 300bn).

While the rapid growth of the region’s infrastructure is helping drive the segment, the expansion of specific sectors is also driving the creation of specialised cleaning practices. This includes the advancement of skillsets utilised in hospitality, construction, and technologically advanced facilities such as data centres. In particular, exterior building cleaning services are quickly gaining popularity.

There is also a shifting viewpoint within the industry that no longer sees the segment’s responsibility as solely keeping the front-office clean and shiny. Instead, the current viewpoint supports the rise of a commercial cleaning market, whose centric focus is geared towards the maintenance and longevity of assets. This has led to increased interest by FM providers to become involved with building design right from inception, ensuring that projects are constructed with the proper facilities to support a high quality cleaning services.

Increased responsibilities and specialisation alone however, do not necessarily evolve the industry. At the other end of the equation are the supplies and the equipment, which too have advanced in terms of technological prowess.
This month, fmME takes a closer look at a handful of cleaning products and equipment that are currently being used in the market. Exploring unique features, application, as well as direct impact, we highlight how each kit is helping to make a difference in their respective arenas.
