CWO Awards: Ras Al Hamra scores sustainability win
Housing community for employees of state oil firm PDO recognised for its green credentials
Phase one of the Ras Al Hamra development project in Muscat picked up the Sustainable Project of the Year at the Construction Week Oman 2015 Awards.
The project won out ahead of entries from the German University of Technology for its Ecohaus concept, the construction of an eco house by Carillion Alawi, the Atana Musandam resort and CCC's new headquarters.
Ras Al Hamra is a purpose-built sustainable housing community which has been built by national oil company Petroleum Development Oman for its staff.
The project's development manager, Ahmed Shaibani, told CW that he was pleased that it won through such a competitive field: "It was quite challenging, seeing the [other] nominations.
"We invested a lot in energy conservation, in energy integration, in maximising the use of natural resources. We tried to push a lot to achieve other efficiencies in terms of using resources or deploying new technologies."
The project covers an area of 281 hectares and the first phase, which has been built by Al Turki Enterprises, contains 241 residential units made up of 108 apartments, 82 townhouses and 51 detached and semi-detached projects. Around 3,000 workers were involved in its construction.
The Construction Week Oman 2015 Awards took place at the Muscatt Grand Hyatt on 30 March. The awards were sponsored by platinum sponsor Aecom, gold sponsors Famco, Oman Electromechanical Company and Logical Decking, category sponsors CCC, Services & Trade Co and Alemco Zawawi, as well as by aluminium extruder Napco.
