Oman's biggest listed contractor, Galfar Enginering & Contracting, has landed a $56m contract to carry out site preparation work for the new Duqm refinery.

The firm said in a statement that it had been awarded the deal by Duqm Refinery and Petrochemical Industries Co – the 50:50 joint venture between state-owned firms Oman Oil Company and Abu Dhabi's International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC).

The site is around 900 hectares in area and Galfar has said that the work will take 60 weeks to complete.

The refinery is eventually expected to process around 230,000 barrels of oil per day, with the supply coming from both Oman and the UAE.

It is due to complete in 2019. A Technip/Shaw Energy joint venture was appointed as project management consultants in 2012 and a tender for an EPC contractor to build the facility was floated in September 2014.
