Foster + Partners chosen to oversee d3's phase 2
Slated for completion by 2017, the second phase is dedicated to the creative community and will cover 100 hectares within the district.
Dubai Design District (d3) has unveiled plans for the second phase of its development.
Catering to the creative community, the second phase expansion includes 100 hectares of built-up space to serve as a cultural epicentre in d3. It is expected to be completed by 2017.
The winning design was penned by Foster + Partners, a UK-based studio for architecture and integrated design. It will comprise of offices, co-working communal facilities, outdoor display venues and pedestrianised spaces.
“Approaching the brief, our first step was to explore the balance of activities in a successful, youthful, creative hub, and to understand the aspirations of the different users,” commented Gerard Evenden, studio head at Foster + Partners.
“We analysed the way that spaces were being used, and then brought a variety of functions together to encourage collaboration between disciplines. This, combined with the highly flexible modules, will help to create a thriving, self-sustaining community.”
Mohammad Al Shehhi, COO of d3 added: “We have undertaken extensive research and fact finding, to better understand what makes design communities really thrive. We quickly established that one of the key ingredients for a flourishing design scene, that will grow as people inhabit the area, is affordable space designed to inspire creativity.”
