Probe into assault of KSA hand

Sudheesh Kalathil Parambil, a construction worker from the South Indian state of Kerala, was allegedly beaten unconscious by his superiors for protecting his co-worker from being assaulted.

Parambil was working as a manual labourer for a construction company in Khamis Mushayt on a Barak worksite, about 150kms away from the city.

He was found by a group of social workers in a critical condition in Al Kharj, a city 80kms from the capital. He was admitted to the intensive care unit at a hospital in the Riyadh Medical Complex.

A spokesman for the Indian Embassy in Riyadh, who declined to identify himself, told Construction Week that embassy officials were aware of the incident and that investigations were ongoing.

"He (the worker) is still in the hospital and we're waiting for the Saudi Arabian government to respond on the incident," he said.

The Federation of Kerala Associations in Saudi Arabia has reportedly written a letter to the government-approved National Human Rights Commission asking it to investigate the matter and to press charges against the alleged attacker.

According to the Indian Embassy one of the men was caught taking a short break after loading a dump truck with sand. The supervisor, an Egyptian national, then began to physically assault the workers. Parambil intervened and the supervisor then turned his rage on him and beat him unconscious.
