Le Meridien turns to green energy

Dubai-based firm Save Energy General Trading has won a US $27.2 million (AED100 million) build-operate-transfer (BOT) contract to update the cooling system at Le Meridien Dubai hotel.

Dubai-based firm Save Energy General Trading has won a US $27.2 million (AED100 million) build-operate-transfer (BOT) contract to update the cooling system at Le Meridien Dubai hotel.

The new plant will centre around a tri-generation system that will be used to supply air conditioning and hot water to the hotel. Once installed it will reduce the hotels carbon footprint by more than 65% reported Save Energy CEO Stephen Sawyer. EtaOne Orient is acting as Save Energys co-partner in the provision of the system.

Under the contract, the firms will provide a tri-generation system that will use the generator exhaust to supply heat to a steam boiler that provides hot water at up to 60°C to the hotel, plus 195°C to an absorption chiller. The absorption chiller will in turn provide air conditioning for the hotel.

The system will be combined with solar thermal panels to reduce the bottom line energy costs of the main hotel by an estimated 54% based on a 2006 audit. Based on this audit, the electricity-steam hot water and air conditioning system designed by the firm will provide electricity at 12 fils/kWh. As a result of the overall energy audit carried out, recycled water will be used in the cooling towers, saving an estimated $136,000/month in peak summer periods at the hotel.

The tri-generation system designed for Le Meridien Dubai will provide up to 4,000 tonnes of air conditioning and 4.5MW of electricity for the hotel. The 22 month project is scheduled to begin in September 2008.
