Carmudi claim live camel with Jordan rally victory
Car classifieds team clinches Allgäu-Orient-Rallye from Europe to Jordan; wins camel
The charity Allgaeu-Orient Rallye saw the winner’s earnings – bragging rights and a live camel for donation to a charity – awarded to the Carmudi-sponsored Team 77 Getriebesand from Munich.
Jordan’s Minister of Tourism handed over a bronze camel trophy and its real life counterpart to the winning team at the Dead Sea Crowne Plaza on 30 May, who have been left scratching their heads over what to do with the live camel, which cannot be taken out of the country and is usually donated.
“We are the last ones that would expect this,” Lukasz Wiacek, the winning team’s leader, told Carmudi. “Now we own a camel. And we have no idea what to do with it.”
HRH Crown Prince Hussein of Jordan also participated in the rally three days before the ceremony, leading the 500 participants across 25km of desert from Kian Khana to Amra Palace in the northeast of the country.
In total, some 258 vehicles took part in the rally, driving through Albania, Italy, Croatia and down to Istanbul before being ferried into Jordan three weeks later.
Along every step of the way, the teams visited orphanages and shelters and donating pre-prepared packages - with Team 77 delivering roof tiles to a youth centre in Albania and wooden boards for park benches in Turkey.
Under the Crown Prince’s directives, the proceeds from last year’s rally were used to fund cochlear implants for children with hearing disabilities.
