As a part of development work for the Dubai Canal project, construction work on a six-lane flyover on Dubai's Jumeirah Road has begun in the city.

A kilometre long detour, which runs between Dubai Ladies Club and Al Athar Street, was implemented on Jumeirah Road to ensure smooth traffic flow.

Once completed, the flyover on Jumeirah Road will see Dubai Canal flowing below it.

Work on the $544.4m (AED2bn) Dubai Canal project is currently at various stages of construction.

A 16-lane flyover on Sheikh Zayed Road is halfway through completion, and a flyover on Al Wasl Road has also "seen significant progress", local daily Gulf News reported.

The Shaikh Zayed Road flyover will rise eight metres high and will stretch for 800 metres.

As part of phase three, excavation of the canal inside Safa Park is in full swing, which will see the Business Bay Canal connecting with the Arabian Gulf, transforming Dubai's areas like Jumeirah, Bur Dubai, Zabeel, and Karama, into an island.

The final phase also involves construction of three pedestrian bridges linking the two sides of the canal.

Scheduled for completion in mid-2016, the canal will run 3.2km from Business Bay and empty into the sea in Jumeirah.

The canal is being carried out by three construction giants under three separate tenders.

The $157.9m (AED580m) phase 1, contracted to Turkish firms Mapa and Gunal, includes construction of a 16-lane flyover on Shaikh Zayed Road under which the canal will flow, began early last year.

The $104.5m (AED384m) phase 2, being undertaken by China State Corporation, involves construction of six-lane bridges each on Al Wasl and Jumeirah roads.

The contract of the phase 3 has been awarded to Belhasa Six Construct Co, which along with phases one and two are scheduled to be ready by 2016, the report added.
