Qatar's minister of labour and  social affairs confirmed a standard GCC building code will be launched by the end of 2015.

HE Abdullah Saleh Mubarak Al Khulaifi said ministries and other agencies concerned with housing will be consulted prior to the code's launch, scheduled for 28 December, 2015.

Other committees and bodies, such as Qatar's Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning, Ashghal (Public Works Authority), and Specifications and Standards Authority will be consulted on the draft of the code.

Experts said the code will be based on international best practices and focus on safety and sustainable development.

The code will also account for the environmental needs of the region, its topography and Arab and Islamic architecture, according to The Peninsula.

Al Khulaifi said experiences of member states in housing were also discussed by GCC housing ministers at a meeting they convened in.

Qatar's minister said the housing ministers of Arab countries will meet at Arab League in Cairo this December, and discuss Arab architecture, among other things.
