UK-headquartered Atkins announced the acquisition of the projects, products, and technology segment (PP&T) of EnergySolutions, an American nuclear engineering services business.

Atkins's acquisition amounts to $318m (£206m).

PP&T comprises 650 people, and offers technical engineering and programme management services for the decontamination and decommissioning of high hazard nuclear facilities, and for the environmental remediation of nuclear waste storage sites.

Dr Uwe Krueger, CEO of Atkins, explained how the acquisition will impact Atkins's operations in the Middle East, and around the world.

"This acquisition accelerates our nuclear strategy and creates a global platform. Our combined business is well positioned in all the major nuclear markets in North America, UK, Europe, Middle East and Asia Pacific.

"This [move] complements our acquisition last year of Nuclear Safety Associates."

Atkins's nuclear project portfolio in the Middle East includes the UAE nuclear new build programme, and the Saudi Arabia Workforce Planning project, where Atkins is working on an assessment of skills and capability requirements for the Kingdom's nuclear and renewables programme.
