Atkins landed the GCC Project to the Year for its work on Dubai Opera.

The prize was presented at the 2015 MEP Middle East Awards held on Wednesday 18 November at the Park Hyatt in Dubai.

Scheduled for completion in 2016, the firm said the key feature and greatest design challenge is its distinct ability to transform internally to host opera, theatre, concert, exhibition, banquet and conference occasions.

The judges were clearly impressed, saying the project showed a sophisticated, sustainable and advanced design with utmost attention to safety.

A Kesavaraman, senior mechanical engineer at Atkins, said “Everything moves inside Dubai Opera, the floors, the ceiling, the seats. It’s an Opera House that turns into a banquet hall that turns into a theatre.

“And it was our job to ensure the comfort conditions for all those multiple operations, along with the required acoustic performance.

“We’re really looking forward to the first performance – we’ll be there!”

Highly commended was WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff for its work on the expansion of the Mall of the Emirates in Dubai. The other shortlisted projects were: Al Jalila Children's Speciality Hospital - Sensaire Servcies, Westin Doha Hotel & Spa - KEO International Consultants, Jabal Omar Development Project Phase IV - Al Futaim Engineering & Technologies, KKIA Terminal 5 - Akfa Holding, Fujairah Hotel Project - Al Shirawi Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Company, Bab Al Qasr Hotel & Residence - AE Arma-Elektropanc.

An independent panel of judges six judges (with MEP Middle East having the deciding vote in the case of a tie) made up of industry professionals from across the GCC and throughout the construction sector came up with the final decision in each of the 15 categories.

This year’s the event was supported by Platinum Sponsor Trimble, Gold Sponsors Famco, ALEMCO, Arcadis, SSH, and Elemecs; Silver Sponsors Betec CAD, Leminar and Rheem Manufacturing; Category Sponsors Trox, Energi People, IMI Hydronic Engineering, Faisal Jassam Trading, Beeby Anderson Recruitment (B-A-R); Entertainment Sponsor Black & White Engineering; and Social Media Sponsor Godwin Austen Johnson.
