Defining a smart city is key to creating a healthy one, according to Alaa Dalghan, B+B Smart Worx, UAE

During his talk at the Leaders in Rail Summit 2015, Alaa Dalghan, general manager for B+B Smart Worx’s UAE operations, said it is key to understand the definition of a smart city in order to effectively develop one.

“How do you define it? Google will give you a 100 different answers to that question,” Dalghan said. “One of my favourite definitions of a smart city is: ‘A smart city is one that utilises information communication technology to maximise the use of its resources’. That, I believe, achieves two goals. Firstly, it increases the satisfaction and quality of life of its citizens. Secondly, it is a more environment-friendly and sustainable option.

“What I like about this definition is that it does not put technology at the centre of progress, nor does it prioritise development for the sake of development. It focusses on citizens – to develop a smart city, you must think about the citizens first, and proceed thereon.”
