Sharjah is set to become one of the first cities in the Middle East to introduce solar-powered Wi-Fi bins. Set to be deployed across prominent locations at the start of 2016, the project stems from a MoU signed between the Emirate and Bee’ah.

Designed and built by BigBelly, a provider of bin technologies in US, Bee’ah will oversee the deployment and management of hundreds of bins in key locations in Sharjah.

Each Smart bin will act as a Wi-Fi hotspot and will be equipped with sensors to detect the capacity of collected waste.

In addition to powering the unit’s Wi-Fi capabilities, the solar panels will also generate the on-board compactor, which enables the bins to hold give times more waste than before being emptied.

Once full, the environmental and waste management firm’s trash collection arm, Tandeef, will handle the collection. The new solar bins will complement Tandeef’s recently launched Smart Eco-fleet, which combined vehicular green technology and smart functionality.

Commenting on the project, Salim Al Owais, chairman of Bee’ah said: "The smart wi-fi bins being introduced by Bee’ah are a step forward in environmental innovation, optimally merging efficiency and utility.”

Similarly, Khaled Al Huraimel, group CEO of Bee’ah added: "At Bee’ah, our top priority is innovation to augment the quality of life among communities in Sharjah and the UAE. How we manage waste is one of the most important challenges of our time. Smart solar-powered technology can change our lives".
