WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff Middle East (WSP | PB ME) was rewarded Sustainability Initiative of the Year at the Construction Week Awards 2015 for its Outdoor Thermal Comfort programme, held on Wednesday, 9 December at InterContinental – Dubai Festival City.

The multi-disciplinary consultancy developed a tailored system to measure outdoor space comfort in order to make external spaces in the region more habitable.

WSP | PB ME’s programme has already been implemented on projects across the region; for instance, a microclimate and comfort analysis was performed for the Al Zahia Master Plan in Sharjah

The jury was impressed with WSP | PB ME’s ideas behind the initiative, and as one judge said: “By making sustainability a part of the corporate culture within the firm, this thinking trickles down into every project down to the smallest details.

"Through small and big ideas on sustainability this firm is [going to] have a positive impact on our environment.”

Hayssam Barhoun, associate for sustainability and energy at WSP | PB ME, said: "We are pleased and excited with this win award because it reinforces our position in the industry.

"The initiative allows us to provide better services to improve the sustainability and improve the usability of outdoor spaces in the Middle East and especially in Dubai."

Brookfield Multiplex’s Biofuel Initiative was highly commended in this category, which included shortlisted nominations such as The Wave, Muscat by Arabian Pyramids; Bidbid Sur Road project by Larsen and Toubro; CCC Headquarters and CCC Sustainability initiatives each by Consolidated Contractors Company; Construction Waste Management and Pioneer Waste Recycling by Carillion Alawi; Making Tomorrow a Better Place by Carillion Qatar; Polysilicon Solar Panel Manufacturing Facility by Arabian MEP Contracting; PVC by Al Futtaim Carillion; Ras Al Hamra Development Project by Petroleum Development Oman; Renewable Solar Panel Energy Polysilicon Manufacturing Facility -by Arabian MEP Contracting; Qatar Economic Zones GSAS Districts by ASTAD Project Management; and, SustainAbilities by Gulf Contracting.

An independent panel of eight judges made up of industry professionals from across the GCC and throughout the construction sector came up with the final decision in each of the 14 categories.
