Al Maryah Tower by DeSimone Consulting Engineers won the Tower Project of the Year at the Construction Week Awards 2015 held on Wednesday, 9 December at InterContinental – Dubai Festival City.

Al Maryah Tower, located on Al Maryah Island, consists of a 34-storey tower including six podium levels and six levels of sub-terrain parking. Al Maryah Tower is one of the deepest excavated sites in Abu Dhabi.

The tower’s design provides column-free interiors and generous simple spans, made possible by post-tensioned concrete. It was designed for Estidama requirements for one Pearl rating.

“We’re very excited and happy about it. We have won a lot of awards, but this one is special because it is about construction, and we really believe that it is all about construction; not just design - the two go hand-in-hand,” said Ahmed Osman, managing principal at DeSimone Consulting Engineers.

“It was a combination: the architectural, structural, MEP - all the consultant teams working together with the contractor as a team to ensure a successful project.”

Looking to the future, Osman added: “There are a lot of hospitality projects coming up in Dubai because of the Expo, and especially in Dubai we have a lot of projects coming up in the pipeline.”

This year’s highly commended tower project was Central Bank of Kuwait New Head Quarters Building - China State Construction.

Other shortlisted nominees in the category included Emirates Pearl Hotel, Abu Dhabi and Gateway Abraj Quartier Towers at Pearl Qatar.

An independent panel of eight judges made up of industry professionals from across the GCC and throughout the construction sector came up with the final decision in each of the 14 categories.

Al Maryah Tower by DeSimone Consulting Engineers was also highly commended in the Commercial Project of the Year category.

Construction Week Awards 2015 was supported by Platinum Sponsors FAMCO and Arcadis, Gold Sponsors Liebherr GENAVCO, Nora, ALEC and Logical Contracting, Category Sponsors Projacs, Kone, Aecom, Atkins, Soprema and Brookfield Multiplex, Official Aluminium Extruder NAPCO, Supporting Association The Chartered Institute of Building, and Social Media Sponsor, WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff.
