UAE's Empower visits India under UNEP initiative
The district cooling service provider participated in the Rapid Assessment of Indian Cities for District Cooling programme, part of UNEP's District Energy in Cities initiative
Empower recently participated in the District Energy Cities initiative of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Under the Rapid Assessment of Indian Cities for District Cooling programme, which is part of the initiative, Empower visited India to assess the state of district cooling in the cities of Pune and Coimbatore.
The team from the UAE-based district cooling service provider met with representatives from each city’s councils. The discussions covered the current infrastructure level in each city, as well as the requirements for deploying additional district energy projects.
HE Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO, Empower, shared: “During this rapid assessment, our technical experts worked with both officials from cities to identify potential for DC as well as barriers.”
He added: “Our involvement in this program supports global transformation efforts to have the transition from the heating and cooling sector to low-carbon DC and raise awareness of energy efficient solutions.”
Empower was officially selected as a partner for the programme during the International District Energy Association (IDEA) annual conference and trade show in Boston last year.
At the event, Empower outlined the requirements for deploying district cooling systems in select cities in India as Phase 1. The company also highlighted how the strategy could be adopted for African and Latin American countries.
"As a follow-up to this visit, we will send another delegation to other Indian cities in coming months for a project study. This demonstrates UNEP's trust and the success of our Pune and Coimbatore visit," concluded Bin Shafar.
