As part of its participation of the 2nd RetrofitTech Conference in Dubai, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), inaugurated the annual event.

Running from the 14 – 15 March 2016, the conference showcased the latest technologies and developments related to retrofit of existing buildings. Hosted at the Park Hyatt hotel in Dubai, the annual event also explored the current challenges of the UAE’s retrofit market, as well as key trends such as energy efficiency and sustainability.

HE Al Tayer highlighted in his keynote speech the importance of reducing the emirate’s energy demand by 30% by 2030, as per the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030.

DEWA’s head also highlighted the Carbon Abatement Strategy which aims to reduce carbon emissions by 16% by 2021.

“This firm’s [DEWA} commitment and ongoing support by our wise leadership has promoted the importance of environmental issues and their inclusion in all Dubai’s development plans,” commented Al Tayer on the recent initiatives launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

“As a result, the Emirate has made significant advances in addressing energy efficiency, security, rationalisation, and efficiency of energy demand as key elements of its plans for sustainable development,” he added.

One particular project highlighted at the RetrofitTech Conference 2016 was Etihad ESCO’s ongoing retrofit of 157 buildings in the Jebel Ali Free Zone. The project is expected to save up to $5.98mn (AED 22mn) annually in electricity and water costs.
