We’re already a three months into 2016, and if you’re like most people, you’ve probably set a list of goals to boost your career this year.

If one of these goals is to improve your skills, you’re in luck. Here, the career experts at Bayt.com, have come up with three top tips on how to succeed in improving your career prospects in 2016.

1. Identify the skills that are in demand
When embarking on a job search, it’s important to understand the job market in your country, and to know what skills are in highest demand.

The Bayt.com Middle East Job Index Survey, published in February 2016, shows that the ability to communicate in Arabic and English (65%) is by far the most sought-after skill amongst companies in the Middle East. Being a team player comes a close second with 48%.

Tools such as Bayt.com’s Career Map can help you to compare your construction-related skills with those most in demand in your country or target job role.

After figuring out what skills you have, what skills you need to sharpen, and what skills you need to add to your repertoire, it is time to move to step two.

2. Advance your skills – take a course
To advance in your career and rise through the ranks, you need to offer companies the skills experience that are most needed. Professionals in the region are encouraged to take online courses, constantly test their skills, network with relevant industry professionals, and keep their online profiles sharp and up to date.

It’s important you find the courses that will help you improve your skills and add some new ones to your CV. Your options are broad, from time management and business writing to more technical skills, like circuit design and civil engineering.

3. Test your skills
You have taken the courses to acquire the skills you identified as being in demand. Now is the time to show employers what you’re capable of. What is the use of all those courses if no-one knows about them? Take a test.

There are many tests online that can help you to assess your skills. By completing a test on Bayt.com, for example, you get a certificate and can publish your results. The certificate is automatically displayed on your Bayt.com CV, making you more discoverable to employees.

You should also download any certificates in PDF format to send directly to potential employers.
