UAE: Al Shamkha, Shawamekh works to begin Q2 2016
With the tender process already underway, infrastructure works for the redevelopment of Abu Dhabi’s Al Shamkha and Al Shawamekh areas are scheduled to begin in Q2 2016
Infrastructure works to be conducted as part of the redevelopment of Abu Dhabi’s Al Shamkha and Al Shawamekh areas will begin in Q2 2016.
The Internal Roads and Infrastructure project will commence following the completion of the tender process, which is already underway. These works are expected to take 18 months to complete.
The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City (ADM) will coordinate with project manager Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada) to conduct the works. Abu Dhabi Housing Authority (ADHA) will oversee the development of residential plots within the areas.
Commenting on the upcoming infrastructure works, Eng Ali Alhaj Al Mehairbi, executive director – buildings construction management at Musanada, said: “Al Shamkha and Al Shawamekh projects represent [the Abu Dhabi Leaders’ commitment to] provide good living conditions for citizens, along with securing the social stability of families within the Emirate.
“Musanada always exerts its best efforts towards implementing the national projects assigned to it, within the specified periods and in accordance with the most modern methods, by utilising its well-qualified and trained staff and its strong capabilities,” he added.
Activities at Al Shamkha will include the design and construction of infrastructure to serve multiple plots for residential, service, governmental, educational, health, religious, recreational, and commercial purposes. The works will involve the construction of a 31km-long road, and telecommunications, sewerage, rainwater drainage, and electrical infrastructure.
Works at neighbouring Al Shawamekh will cover electrical, water, sewerage, telecommunications, rainwater drainage, lighting poles, and pavements. In total, 27km of roads are due to be constructed for the area.
The redevelopment project will take place in line with master plans drawn up by Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC), in conjunction with the Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport, ADHA, and Musanada.
Once completed, the redevelopment project will provide residential areas for UAE nationals, and will include a network of community facilities such as schools, health facilities, commercial spaces, parks, entertainment facilities, pedestrian paths, cycle lanes, and mosques.
HE Ali Khalifa Al Qemzi, executive director of planning and projects at ADHA, commented: “Not only do these master plans help to meet the growing need for housing throughout Abu Dhabi, but they also ensure the creation of communities that incorporate the highest levels of quality and efficiency, thereby satisfying the safety and comfort of current and future generations of UAE nationals.”
