Football fans at the 2022 World Cup could be housed in Bedouin-style tents in desert areas as tumbling oil prices force Qatar to delay projects.

Some of the 500,000 fans expected to arrive in the country might be accommodated under canvas as the Gulf nation struggles to meet the targeted number of hotel rooms.

Qatar's World Cup bid in 2010 promised 55,000 rooms - but authorities in January said 46,000 rooms would be ready for the tournament.

FIFA's requirement was for 60,000 rooms to be available.

Speaking to Reuters, a spokesperson for Qatar's World Cup Supreme Committee, said: "At the heart of this World Cup is a commitment to showcase the hospitality and friendship of the Middle East.

"As a result, we are actively researching the concept of supporters sleeping under the stars."

Bedouin-style campsites have been suggested as a creative and culturally authentic way to meet FIFA requirements.

Since winning its bid, Qatar has spent tens of billions of dollars on upgrading infrastructure and has built scores of hotels and apartment complexes.

However, some projects have stalled including a $12bn bridge, underwater tunnel link across Doha bay and two hotels in the capital.

Some Qataris are critical of the furious pace at which World Cup construction is happening, Reuters added.

One former Qatari diplomat, said: "In the past five years the number of hotel rooms has doubled, now they are looking at doubling them again.

"People are asking: 'How sustainable is this?', 'One the cup is over what do we, as Qataris, really need with all these hotels?'"
