Carillion Alawi received the Health and Safety Initiative of the Year Award at the Construction Week Oman Awards 2016.

The trophy, which was presented during a gala dinner and winners’ ceremony in Muscat last night, was handed over in recognition of the contractor’s Roadmap 2015-2020 initiative.

The initiative is designed to drive down accidents and help promote a positive health and safety culture throughout the operations of Carillion Alawi and the wider construction industry. Roadmap 2015-2020 sets out a series of clear objectives, and outlines the actions necessary to ensure that each is met.

Commenting on the programme, Jamie Selway, IMS systems and compliance manager at Carillion Alawi, said: “We spent three or four months identifying strengths and weaknesses. We were looking for easy wins, but also the areas in which we could make the biggest difference.

“Effective health and safety doesn’t happen overnight, and it requires significant investment from Carillion Alawi,” he noted.

Ankur “Goldy” Bhuria, regional IMS manager at Carillion Alawi, added: “We are always looking for ways to improve health and safety culture. Roadmap 2015-2020 represents what Carillion Alawi wants to achieve within the field of health and safety, and how it wants to achieve these goals.”

One judge commended Carillion Alawi on its track record within health and safety, noting: “Safety is not an initiative; it is a culture. Tonight’s winner clearly understands this and is leading the industry on the road to safety across its work sites.”

Another panel member said of Carillion Alawi: “[The contractor] leaves nothing to chance. It either does something well, or not at all.”

Other shortlisted nominations for the Health and Safety Initiative of the Year included Larsen & Toubro (Oman) LLC’s Awareness Programme, Greasing of Conveyor Rotary Parts, Rear View Camera, Safe Transferring Micro Silica Material, and Water Sprinkling schemes.

Construction Week would like to thank its panel of industry judges for selecting the ultimate winners of this year’s awards categories.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to this year’s sponsors, without whom the CW Oman Awards would not be possible. The event was held in partnership with The Big Show Oman, Gold Category Sponsors Aecom and FAMCO, Category Sponsors Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) and S&T Interiors and Contracting, and Official Aluminium Extruder, National Aluminium Products Company (NAPCO).
