Carillion Alawi scooped the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Initiative of the Year Award at the Construction Week Oman Awards 2016.

The prize was awarded in recognition of the contractor’s Employees’ Special Leave Policy for Volunteering, and was presented during a gala dinner and winners’ ceremony in Muscat last night.

Carillion Alawi’s CSR initiative was recognised by Construction Week’s judges for its efforts to free up employees’ time, thus allowing them to engage in activities that benefit their surrounding communities.

Judges were impressed by the fact that in 2015, more than 2,000 Carillion Alawi employees engaged in internal and external community management schemes. 175 CSR events were conducted as part of the Employees’ Special Leave Policy for Volunteering programme.

Paid volunteering and environmental contributions were encouraged, in addition to 1% of profits being directed to community engagement activities.

Commenting on the programme, Raja Packirisamy, sustainability manager at Carillion Alawi, said: “The Employees’ Special Leave Policy for Volunteering allows staff members to use around six working days per year for community engagement. We set a goal for 10% of our employees to enrol with schools, outreach groups, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and charities. Our aim is for another 22% to enrol in environmental and healthcare activities.”

The other finalist in this category was the Defensive Driver Training initiative from Larsen & Toubro (Oman) LLC.

Construction Week would like to thank its panel of industry judges for selecting the ultimate winners of this year’s awards categories.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to this year’s sponsors, without whom the CW Oman Awards would not be possible. The event was held in partnership with The Big Show Oman, Gold Category Sponsors Aecom and FAMCO, Category Sponsors Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) and S&T Interiors and Contracting, and Official Aluminium Extruder, National Aluminium Products Company (NAPCO).
