CW Oman Awards: Construction Executive awarded
Find out who was named the Sultanate’s top construction executive of the year at the Construction Week Oman Awards 2016
Marco G Malpiedi, managing director for Atkins in the Sultanate of Oman, was crowned Construction Executive of the Year at the Construction Week Oman Awards 2016.
Atkins’ MD for the Sultanate received the accolade in recognition of his staff-focused approach to management. Malpiedi collected his prize during a gala dinner and winners’ ceremony held in Muscat last night.
Malpiedi received the accolade in recognition of his staff-focused approach to management. Commenting on his time as Atkins’ MD in Oman, he said: “We’ve totally changed our approach to Omanisation; we’ve moved away from a quota-driven mindset to a strategy of finding the right people and working to empower them.
“When it comes to workforce development more generally, it’s important to acknowledge that we all have different strengths and weaknesses. It’s no good expecting everybody to do everything. You’ve got to work to distribute responsibility in line with people’s specific skills.
“But also, with our engineers and our architects, they’ve got to strive not to be the best of a bad bunch, but the best,” Malpiedi told Construction Week.
According to his nomination, Malpiedi lives by the motto: “Produce leaders, not followers.” Since taking charge of Atkins’ Omani activities, he has helped to unlock the potential of staff at all levels, allowing his workforce to improve both individually and collectively, according to the consultancy.
In the words of one judge: “[Malpiedi] operates on a senior level, yet prioritises staff relationships and development."
In addition to his employee-first approach, Construction Week’s panel of judges praised Malpiedi for the 30% improvement in profitability over which he has presided.
Also shortlisted for the Construction Executive of the Year Award were SSH’s Danny Warde, Hoehler + Al Salmy’s Muhammad Sultan Al Salmy, and ALEMCO’s Steven Little.
Construction Week would like to thank its panel of industry judges for selecting the ultimate winners of this year’s awards categories.
We would also like to extend our gratitude to this year’s sponsors, without whom the CW Oman Awards would not be possible. The event was held in partnership with The Big Show Oman, Gold Category Sponsors Aecom and FAMCO, Category Sponsors Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) and S&T Interiors and Contracting, and Official Aluminium Extruder, National Aluminium Products Company (NAPCO).
