Video: Huge blaze hits residential tower in Ajman

Residents of the tower in Ajman were evacuated as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze

A major fire broke out in a residential tower at Ajman in the United Arab Emirates late on Monday, 28 March, 2016.

Residents of the tower were evacuated as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.

The fire struck one tower in Ajman before spreading to an adjacent block.

Several residents were reportedly treated for breathing problems and minor injuries.

Footage from the blaze shows debris falling from a building of more than two dozen storey as police cordoned off roads leading to the site.

The incident is the latest in a series of blazes to hit the country's high-rise buildings.

On New Year's Eve, a large fire engulfed the Address Downtown Dubai Hotel.

The latest fire began late on Monday in the Ajman One complex - a development of 12 towers with some 3,000 apartments.

Experts have reportedly said the speed at which the fires spread may be down to the use of flammable cladding on the buildings' exteriors for decoration or insulation.
