Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (EMPOWER) has reportedly saved 263 million gallons of fresh water in 2015.

The success of the company has been attributed to Empower’s replacement of fresh water with Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE), which utilises treated water as part of the district cooling process.

Commenting on the achievement, HE Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Empower, shared: “Empower succeeded in achieving record water saving in 2015, thanks to the directives of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, stipulated that district cooling companies must opt for sea water, grey water or TSE as opposed to desalinated water.”

Equating to the capacity of 478 Olympic-sized swimming pools, Empower achieved this feat despite rising demand in district cooling services in Dubai, which the company manages 70% of.

The technology was previously recognised by the International District Energy Association (IDEA) with its inaugural Innovation Award in 2013.

“Empower follows strict criteria and develops advanced techniques that enable us to re-use treated water repeatedly, which saves millions of gallons of water,” commented HE Bin Shafar.

He added: “We use TSE water in our tanks at the plants, which is further treated to produce chilled water several times. Empower boasts a network of insulated pipes to transport chilled water to the buildings where warm water returns to Empower’s plant rooms to be re-chilled.”
