LED lighting is a wise choice for building owners looking to retrofit their properties.

David Clements, managing director of Future Designs, told fmME that the growing trend of LED in the GCC will greatly benefit retrofit operations.

"There are significant advantages of retrofitting existing lighting fixtures with latest LED technology," he explained.

"Energy and carbon reduction increase the life-cycle of LED over fluorescent or halogen, and also lead to savings of raw materials.

"For instance, reusing the steel in an existing luminaire carcass drastically reduces the use of natural resources, so all in all retrofitting is a ‘win-win’ means of updating lighting," Clements added.

Future Designs might soon establish manufacturing facilities in the GCC based on the region's proactive approach to sustainability.

"We are in discussions now of the feasibility of setting up a manufacturing facility in the GCC," Clements told fmME.

"Led by the UAE, the region is actively promoting its desire to welcome organisations like ours to bring manufacturing skills, and I can see us doing this within two years."
