A former construction company chairman and two other defendants pleaded guilty to charges of hiding US $326 million (JPY3.8 billion) in corporate tax evasion at the Tokyo District Court earlier this month.

Isao Mizutani, former chairman of Mizutani Kensetsu, pleaded guilty.

The two other defendants are a former representative director of the board in charge of accounting, and the construction company itself.

In their opening statement, prosecutors disclosed how Mizutani and others manipulated the firm's financial statements to raise off-the-books money used to facilitate the acquisition of contracts for additional public works projects.
