Nakheel and Spanish hospitality firm, RIU Hotels & Resorts (Riu), announced development commencement of their $245.1m (AED900m) beachfront resort at Deira Islands.

The 800-room project is being developed under a joint venture agreement, and will also comprise a water park.

The development spans 31.6ha (3.4 million sqf) of Nakheel's Deira Islands master project, with the water park occupying 10% of the overall area.

Consultants Dar Al Handasah have been appointed to oversee the project's design, engineering, and construction supervision elements.

A construction tender is expected to be released by the end of 2016, with completion expected in Q3 2019.

The project is expected to be Dubai's first all-inclusive four-star hotel concept, and is Riu's first property in the GCC.

Components planned for the property include four swimming pools, a kids' club, a spa and fitness centre, and a variety of restaurants.

Nakheel and Riu inked their joint venture agreement in Mallorca this February, Dubai Media Office reported.
