BIM Summit: All stakeholders can benefit from tech

All stakeholders involved in the development process, from clients to maintenance staff, can benefit from building information modelling, according to panellists at BIM Summit 2016

From clients and investors to onsite maintenance staff, everybody has the potential to benefit from building information modelling (BIM).

This is the view of Andrew Milburn, associate at architect and design firm, Godwin Austen Johnson.

Speaking at Middle East Architect’s BIM Summit 2016, Milburn said that he advocates a policy of “open BIM”.

“What needs to happen is for more people from across the industry to get involved in the use of BIM,” he told attendees.

“Those who are currently using it need to loosen their grip and get others involved,” he added. “We need much more collaboration, from the initial stages right through to end use – and at all levels across the business.

“Even a person sweeping a site should be able to call his office, say what work they have done, and ask where they need to go next.”

Milburn called on manufacturers to make greater use of BIM, and took a quick count of what the summit’s delegates felt were the highest costs on any project.

The audience said that up to 70% of outlay were associated with materials, with just 10% required for architects and construction work.

“Why aren’t we engaging [the manufacturers] more?” asked Milburn. “Is this the missing piece of BIM?

“Getting the manufacturers involved assists greatly in the collaborative process. Then, technical solutions to issues will follow,” he concluded.
