$125m Ikea store to open in Bahrain by mid-2018
$125m Ikea Bahrain to open in 2018, main contract awarded to G P Zachariades
Bahrain is set to be home to the largest Ikea store in the GCC with a total investment of $124.68m (BD47m).
Ikea Bahrain, located in Salmabad, will have a total retail area of 37,000m2 and is scheduled to open by mid-2018.
The Swedish furniture retailer’s store in Bahrain is being opened in partnership with Saudi Arabia’s Ghassan Ahmed Al Sulaiman Furniture Trading Company, Ikea Saudi Arabia
Sheikh Khalid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, deputy prime minister of Bahrain was present at Ikea Bahrain’s ground breaking ceremony on Sunday, 30 October.
“We have been striving hard to seek expansion and grow this innovative brand into high potential markets since the start of partnership between Ikea and Ghassan Ahmed Al Sulaiman Furniture Trading Company dating back to 1983," Saud Ghassan Al Sulaiman, the CEO of Ikea Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, was quoted as saying by the Bahrain News Agency.
"The Kingdom of Bahrain is an attractive investment and business destination for retailers giant like Ikea, thanks Bahrain’s vibrant economy and favourable business climate,” he added.
G P Zachariades has been awarded as the main contractor for the project.
The Ikea Bahrain will consists of 6,200m2 in addition to a market hall covering the area of 6,000m2.
The store will have a self-serve area of 5,000m2 and 4,000 m2 of full serve area.
The store will have an eatery consisting of 2500m2 with a total capacity of 800 seats, the biggest restaurant in Bahrain, where customers can sample Swedish delicacies or a local favourite at the restaurant, Fruto Hernandez, Ikea's expansion manager, said.
The bistro and Swedish food market, which facilitates grab-and-go snacks and take-home meals respectively, will take up about 500m2 of the total area.
Ikea is the world’s largest retailer for furniture and is known for its ready-to-assemble furniture and other home appliances.
The company has 385 stores spread over 48 countries.
