UAE: EEG mitigates 94 tonnes of CO2 emissions
An Emirates Environmental Group initiative, which resulted in the collection of 6.25 tonnes of aluminium, mitigated 364t of CO2 and saved 589m3 of landfill space
An initiative spearheaded by Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) resulted in the collection of 6.25 tonnes of aluminium cans.
The Can Collection Drive, which took place across the UAE on Saturday, 29 October, resulted in the mitigation of 364t of carbon dioxide (CO2), and saved 589m3 of landfill space.
The initiative will contribute to EEG’s wider ambition to collect 27t of aluminium cans during the course of 2016.
Habiba Al Marashi, chairperson of EEG, commented: “Waste and how we deal with it is a growing concern in the UAE and across the world, with the realisation that the vast majority of the resources that we rely on to sustain our lifestyles are finite and almost exhausted.
“It is always satisfying to see the combined efforts; hard work and perseverance come to fructification through such engaging community-based activities. Through our programmes, we want the citizenry of the nation to understand that recycling should be a habit, not a choice or option,” she added.
Now in its 20th year, the EEG’s Can Collection Campaign – which includes the flagship Can Collection Drive – has resulted in the collection of more than 275t of aluminium, thus mitigating 4,136t of CO2 emissions and saving 6,689m3 of landfill space.
So far this year, the group has recycled 24.3t of aluminium, constituting 90% of its annual target.
